5. About hometown and family

I am from a big family of five siblings. My mother had a debilitating sickness for about eleven years and died when I was in second year in college. This was the reason why I suddenly ‘shifted’ to writing and public speaking. Fortunately, I made a good career out from the two.
I have been living in Talisay City, about twelve kilometers away from Metro Cebu, since I was five. It was a relatively quiet community dotted before with generous wide-open areas where kids flew their kites and staged their mock battles. Living was simple; water was accessible through artesian wells, grimy children trekked an hour of walk to the public school and mothers washed beside the gently cascading Mananga River. Electricity was used only for lighting, a television set and a transistorized radio and was considered an unwelcome stranger ten years ago.
Now that it is made a city, the place is slowly transforming to a place with unbridled development, unknown potentials, promising growth and a burgeoning slum area. Symbols of progress are everywhere while people who had not the opportunity to go along were left behind living in poverty and in squatter areas. Nonetheless, people are hoping for deliverance, for a chance to have a foretaste of what urbanization offers.
But Talisay City always remains to be my hometown – quiet, simple, peaceful.

6. Comments to students

I have been a teacher for as long as I could remember. I can recall teaching reproduction to my fourth-grader classmates when the teacher was not around. In high school, I taught catechism classes to school-graders. In college, I have been a writing and debate coach, a speaker for numerous debate education programs, and a teacher to students having difficulty in English, engineering and literature. I teach with passion, humor and responsibility.

7. Favorite TV program and its contents

Oprah – The fact that the program is hosted by an African-American sends the message that America is a liberal democracy and has taken great strides in successfully proving so. And the fact that it is hosted by a woman means that the world is flat, the playing field for the two genders is equal, and that the world is a better place for people to learn to understand one another regardless of gender, race and color. Every show, Oprah brings America to the whole world and the whole world to America.

8. Goals and dreams as an English teacher

I dream of having my own house, owning a thriving business, traveling to Europe and Asia, and training a Philippine dream team to win the World’s Universities Debate Championship. I dream of learning ten languages in five years and visiting the countries where they are spoken as first language. Japanese is first in the list.

As an English teacher, I would want my students to learn to speak and write English with fun. My classes will be exciting each time, stress-free and spontaneous.

9. About Japanese and Japan

Japan is a beautiful country with rich history. Like the Philippines, it is composed of islands and they are famous to be promising with sights and scenery. The famed Mt. Fuji and the ultra-urban Tokyo are but two of what Japan is known for.
Japanese people are hardworking and intelligent. I saw Tom Cruise’ The Last Samurai and I learned to appreciate Japan’s history in warfare. I saw their discipline and honor. They are good people who offer breathtaking peek to their nobility through their history. I hope to visit Japan one day and by that time, I will be fluent in Niponggo.
